Germanus and the man possessed. Germanus of Auxerre, c. 378 – c. 448. Bishop of Auxerre. After Januarius, a tax collector, lost his bag containing the yearly taxes he appealed to Germanus to find the thief. After searching for three days all the men of doubtful character were brought before the Bishop in the church, falling to his knees he prayed that the truth be brought to light whereupon the thief was drawn out of the hands that held him and raised upwards in flames shrieking in torment.
