Katie O'Brien: Special Olympics Athlete and Artist

Miss Katie was born on March 26, 1984 (Prince Kuhio Day) in Honolulu, Hawaii. Katie was born with congenital cytomegalovirus resulting in deafness, development delays and seizures. She cannot speak and relies on others to care for her daily needs. Her disabilities, although unique, have never stopped her from participating in her favorite activities. Katie loves to do the hula in sign language. She is an avid athlete who Powerlifts, Bowls, and plays Soccer for Special Olympics, and loves to express herself through her paintings.

Katie’s grandfather was an accomplished artist who has paintings in galleries around the world. Though they never met, Jozef Satin’s legacy lives on in Katie’s artwork. She was introduced to painting by Tom Graham, her intermediate teacher at the Hawaii Center for the Deaf and Blind. Later, at Easter Seals Hawaii, a very special volunteer artist named Lydia Chadwick helped her develop a new side of her artistic abilities. Katie now works in a variety of media including watercolor, acrylic, collage and textures.

Through her involvement in the Special Olympics, Katie met volunteer Barbara Brundage, owner of Printscapes.com. This on-line fine art store represents over 60 artists and makes reproductions of their artwork available to end-user consumers as well as interior designers. Barbara was drawn to Katie’s personality and her artwork and asked if she would contribute to Printscapes.com. Katie’s work has been up on the sight for several months now and is always met with a smile. Her bright use of color and cheerful subject matter communicate hope and joy to the world in a way that words never could.
